Philippine Eagle Size: Explained & Compared With Others

Philippine Eagle Size

Today I will be taking you to the islands of the Philippines where one of the world’s most elusive and formidable birds reside ‘the Philippine Eagle’.

I was actually curious about their size and how they compared with others. After days of research, I’ve compiled all the information regarding their size in this article.

So without further ado, let’s get into it.

Philippine Eagle Height/Length: How Tall Are They?

Philippine Eagle Size

The Philippine Eagle is a rare and strong forest raptor that is particularly notable for its length. Due to this feature, you can quickly identify them from a distance.

Interestingly, the bird exhibits sexual dimorphism, as the female is much taller than the male.

The Philippine Eagle can be as tall as 3 feet and generally are not bigger than 3.5 feet. However, the average size of the Philippine Eagle is 95 cm or 3 ft 1 inch for males and 105 cm or 3 ft 5” for females.

Here is the height of the male and female Philippine eagles in different units:

GenderCentimeter Feet/Inches
Male Philippine Eagle95 cm3 ft 1”
Female Philippine Eagle105 cm3 ft 5”

Philippine Eagle Weight

Philippine Eagle Size

The Philippine eagle is one of the heaviest eagles found. On average the Philippine eagle may weigh between 3.6 and 8.2 kg (8-18 lbs). It is said that only the harpy and Steller’s sea eagles are larger than the Philippine eagle.

Similar to the length of these birds, there are quite variations in the mass of the male and female Philippine Eagles.

Male Philippine eagles are much lighter than their female counterparts. For instance, the male one weighs approximately around 4.5 kg or 9.9 lb and the females weigh around 6.0 kg or 13.2 lb.

A comparison of the weight of the Philippine eagle with other birds in kgs:

Bird typeFemale Male
Philippine Eagle4.5 kg (9.9 lb)6.0 kg (13.2 lb)
Bald Eagle 5.6 kg (12.3 lb)4.1 kg (9 lb)
Harpy Eagle 6 to 9 kg (13.2- 19.8 lb)4 to 5 kg (8.8-11 lb)
Steller sea Eagle 8 to 9 kg (17- 19.8 lb)4.9 to 6 kg (10.8-13.2 lb)

As you can see from the chart above, the heaviest of all the birds is the Steller sea Eagle. And the Harpy Eagle is the second heaviest. However, the Philippine Eagle is much heavier than the Bald Eagle.

Philippine Eagle Wingspan (How Big Is Their Wingspan?)

The wingspan of a bird is measured as the distance from one tip of the wing to the other tip of the wing.

Talking about the wingspan, On average Philippine Eagle, wingspan ranges from 184 to 220 cm (6 ft to 7 ft 3”).

With such a large wingspan size, you can easily view the bird from a distance.

Philippine Eagle Talon Size

Harpy eagles are the top predators, with the largest talons of any surviving eagle and the ability to lift prey weighing as much as their own body weight.

While the Philippine Eagle has a claw size of 3 inches. They can easily catch big enough prey with their claws.

Philippine Eagle Egg Size

Every two years, female eagles deposit one egg, which they incubate for about two months. On average, the egg laid by the Philippine Eagle weighs roughly 134.6 grams (4.75 oz).

How Big Can Philippine Eagles Get?

While the juvenile Philippine eagles are comparatively smaller, the adult of these species can be very large.

The Philippine eagle is commonly claimed to be between 86 to 102 cm or 2 ft 10 in to 3 ft 4 in in total length.

However, based on certain research, the world’s biggest Philippine Eagle is measured to be on an average length of 95 cm (3 ft 1 in) for males and 105 cm (3 ft 5 in) for females.

Philippine Eagle Size Comparison To Human

The Philippine eagle weighs about the same as a healthy one-year-old newborn, yet its wingspan surpasses the height of most normal human adults.

On average, the height of an adult human ranges between 5.5-5.9ft.

In the case of a Philippine Eagle its overall height is 3 feet, but with its wings wide open the height increases to around 7 feet or 2 meters, which is way greater than the adult human height.

So, you can imagine how huge the bird would be.

Philippine Eagle Size Comparison To Harpy Eagle And Bald Eagle

The Philippine Eagle and Harpy Eagle are somewhat similar in their size. In fact, these two eagle species are one of the largest birds in the family of Accipitridae. Small differences in their body type and plumages make them distinct from each other.

Below is a comparison chart between the Philippine Eagle, Harpy Eagle, and the Bald Eagle based on their height, weight, and wingspan.

Philippine Eagle 3 ft to 3.5 ft3.6 to 8.2 kg (8-18 lb)6 ft 0 in to 7 ft 3 in
Harpy Eagle 2 ft 10 in to 3 ft 6 in6 to 9 kg (13 to 20 lb)5 ft 9 in to 7 ft 4 in
Bald Eagle 2.5 ft to 3 ft3 and 6.3 kg (6.6 and 13.9 lb)5 ft 11 in and 7 ft 7 in

Based on the comparison above, we can see that while a Philippine Eagle is taller in size and has a greater wingspan, the Harpy Eagle is much heavier. And the Bald Eagle has the lowest weight, while has a length and wingspan greater than the Harpy Eagle but smaller than the Philippine Eagle.

Philippine Eagle Compared To Steller Sea Eagle

Apart from all the eagles above mentioned, there’s one more enormous eagle species the Stellar Sea Eagle.

Below is a comparison chart between the Steller Sea Eagle and the Philippine Eagle based on their height, weight, and wingspan.
