Hummingbird Hawkmoth is a moth species that feed on the nectar in flowers. These birds can be seen in the daytime while other moths come out at night.

Are there Hummingbirds in captivity In the UK?

In the UK, it is also rare to find Hummingbirds in captivity as it is difficult to keep this bird out of its natural habitat.

The only place where Hummingbirds can be found in the UK would be major zoos across the UK. These specialist bird sanctuaries tend to complete all the needs of the Hummingbirds.

However, it is better to ask the zoo officials to know whether these birds are available to see on that day or not.  

Facts about Hummingbird Hawkmoth

Hummingbird Hawkmoths are moths that fly during the daytime and have a wingspan of around 2 inches (50-58mm).

They have brown bodies with white spotting and hindwings are orange and forewings brown. These moths are experts at hovering and beating their wings fast due to which a humming noise is generated and it appears rather blurry.

They have a habit of rapidly moving from one flower to another and taking nectar with their long proboscis.

Across Mediterranean countries, Japan, and Central Asia, the population of hummingbirds hawkmoths are good-sized.

During the spring, thousands of these moths migrate to the northern part of Europe and they return to their place in the autumn. 


Hummingbirds cannot be spotted in the UK as this habitat is not suitable for them and they cannot migrate from America to reach the UK.

However, if you have seen a hummingbird in the UK, then it would be a hummingbird hawkmoth which is similar to the size and behavior of the hummingbird.
